Chapters 22 and 23

Poor Jem is so sad that Tom didn't win his case. Jem is also saying some pretty bad things about the court system in this town, and how unfair it is. I agree with him. It's the next day now. Mr. Avery and Miss Stephanie Crawford are trying to get me and Jem to answer some questions about the trial. Miss Maudie got us out of there and invited us in for some cake. She's so kind! Jem says that he cannot believe that the people of Maycomb would vote against Tom like that just because he is colored. Jem also says he doesn't think the people of Maycomb are so great anymore.

Chapters 20 and 21

Mr. Raymond is a peculiar man. He is always drinking from a paper sack. It looks like he is always drinking alcohol and the people of Maycomb think he is an alcoholic. He gave me a sip, it's just coca-cola! He told us that he just pretends to be a drunkard because it tells people why he likes blacks better than whites.

Uh oh! Calpurnia is here and she gave Atticus a note! Aw man! he knows that we are here in the colored balcony. But Atticus, we wanna hear the verdict!! He says that we can come back after supper. It's after 11 o clock now, and the jury is about to make a decision!

Chapters 16 and 17

Today is the big trial. After those men tried to hurt Tom, I'm sure he is very nervous. I have noticed that the colored people are only allowed to watch the trial from the balcony. That's not very fair! It's time for the trial to start. Let's see how this goes!

They say that Tom is in trouble because he "raped" someone. I don't know what that  is, but poor Mayella has a bad bruise on her face! Atticus has a very convincing case. He says that Mayella lied! She lied about Tom raping her! She was just beaten by Bob Ewell! Atticus proved it because Bob is a lefty and Tom can't use his left arm!

Chapters 14 and 15

That man Tom's trial is coming up soon. I really hope Atticus does a good job of defending him. What is Dill doing here?! He ran away from home! His poor parents must be worried sick! Jem went and got him food, but he told Atticus. I guess it was the mature thing to do. Atticus went and told Dill's Aunt Rachel. I wish Dill could stay!

Its been a week since Dill has been here. Atticus told me that they are going to move Tom to a different jail, but there was talk that some people might try to hurt him. Poor Tom! Oh no! The men came to the jail! I'm so proud of Atticus for not standing down, but I hope they don't hurt him!

Chapter 10

"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy... but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

A crazy dog has been wandering the streets of Maycomb. Atticus gets sheriff Heck Tate. Heck brings his rifle, but asks Atticus to shoot it! Shockingly, Atticus hits it on the first shot. Miss Maudie tells me he used to be called "One-Shot Finch." I have a strong urge to galavant this fact around, but Jem tells me to keep quiet about it because he doesn't think Atticus would wan't us to know.

Chapters 8 and 9

There is snow outside!! This is such a rare sight! School has even been cancelled today! Jem and I built a makeshift snowman too! It's mostly dirt and we put Miss Maudie's sun hat on it, but I still like it! I woke up last night from my slumber to Find that Miss Maudie's house was on fire! The adults in the area helped her get some of her furniture out, but her house sadly burnt to the ground. I felt a blanket cloak me under its wool. I turned and realized... it was Boo Radley. I quickly became nauseas. The next day, Miss Maudie was in a quite cheerful mood! it is nice to see that she already has plans for another house, and that she plans to make it with a big garden!

At school, I almost fought a boy named Cecil. He was saying bad things about Atticus. Atticus says he only defends the negro because it will keep his sense of self respect and justice. At Christmas, Uncle Jack came to visit. He doesn't like it when i curse in front of him. On Christmas Day, we all went to Finch's Landing. There, we had to deal with Aunt Alexandra, her husband, and Francis, who is Alexandra's grandson. Francis is quite a boring child. I also don't like the way Alexandra talks about how I dress. ONe night, Francis was being mean and called Dill a runt and said some choice words to my daddy. I cursed him and beat him up. I asked Jack not to tell Atticus and he agreed. Thank the lord Atiicus won't find out.

Chapter 1

Hello there! My name is Jean Louise Finch. I prefer to be called Scout. My ancestor, Simon Finch, was a fur trading apothecary. He left England for religious freedom and he started a successful farm called "Finch's Landing." My father, Atticus, is a well respected lawyer here in this town of Maycomb. This is where I live with Atticus and my brother, Jem. A boy named Dill recently moved here with his father and lives quite close to us. We have much fun playing together. We have recently become interested with Boo Radley. We tried to lure him outside but instead, Jem touches the house, and there was no movement. For some reason, I feel like we are being watched from the Radley house...

Chapters 6 and 7

Today is the last day in Maycomb for Dill. Jem told me about his plan to go peek into the Radley house through a shutter. I decided to go with them. We saw a shadow of a man, and shortly after that, someone discharged a shotgun. We ran as fast as we could and slipped under the fence, but Jem got his pants stuck and had to take them off. When we returned home, all of the adults were gathered together. They were talking abour Mr. Nathan Radley who apparently shot a negro in his yard! How frightening!

School has now begun for the year, and Jem has told me that he has retrieved his pants. They had been folded and neatly hung over the fence. How strange... We also found a mysterious ball of grey twine in the tree with the knothole. We took it for ourselves. I quite dislike second grade. It's almost as bad as first grade! Jem says it will get better as the years go along. As the year goes along, we find many trinkets in the tree with the knothole. We found two figures carved out of soap the resemble Jem and I, chewing gum, a spelling bee medal, and an old pocket watch. The day after we found the watch, the knothole was filled with cement. Mr. Radley says it is because the tree is dying.

Chapters 4 and 5

This school's curriculum moves much too slow for a level of my intelligence. I have become bored with this school year, and i wish that it would be summer so I could leave. The strangest thing happened to me after school one day. I passed the Radley house, and i just happened to notice two pieces of chewing gum sticking out of a knothole in a tree. On a similar day, I found two indian head pennies.

Jem and Dill are becoming very close friends. It makes me miss Jem's company sometimes, but I try not to think about it. I started spending time with Maudie Atkinson. She and I are becoming good friends as well. She told me something quite unsettling the other day. She said that Boo Radley was still alive. She says that Boo was very kind and friendly when he was a child, and that most of the rumors about him are not true.

Chapter 2 and 3

Miss Caroline became angry with me today. I did not know that it made me smarter to read with father. I simply read with father because i enjoy his company as well as the stories he reads. Miss Caroline told me too stop reading with father because I am too smart for her class. I really wish I could continue story time with father.

Today at school, I rubbed dirt into another boy's face! Right after that, Miss Caroline was startled by a cootie that crawled out of another boy's head! It was horrifying! A young boy named Burris Ewell was also quite mean to Miss Caroline. Maybe this is because he does not enjoy school because he always skips school after the first day of each year.
